Problem: The computer running V-Ray RT locks up and freezes when starting ActiveShade.
Cause: This is most likely a hardware problem. V-Ray RT cannot cause system freeze by itself. The worst that V-Ray can do is crash 3ds Max or the standalone render server.
Solution: Check your memory chips and/or your CPU temperature, especially if your processors are overclocked.

Problem: The ActiveShade window remains black; the message "Waiting for image data..." may be displayed.

Problem: The ActiveShade window displays a message "error: Could not obtain a license (-98)" and remains black.
Cause: This error means that, while V-Ray RT successfully connected to the V-Ray license server, there are no licenses for V-Ray RT on it:

Cause: This error means that, while V-Ray RT successfully connected to the V-Ray license server, there are no free licenses for V-Ray RT available. All the licenses for V-Ray RT are currently engaged by other machines connected to the license server.
Solution: Check the license server status page to see which machines are currently connected to the license server. Close the 3ds Max ActiveShade window on one of these machines to free a license for V-Ray RT.
